don’t stop

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG  [lyrics below]

“don’t stop” is another song that came to me from a dream.  (check out “shakespeare in the dark”.)  in this case, i woke up from a dream with the hook stuck in my head:  “don’t stop.  i like what you’re doin’.”  at the time, i was at the beginning of a new relationship, and i actually put a lot of my own reality into the song.

this is the first (and only) time i ever used the word “baby” in a romantic song.  it’s not a term i use in that way, but in context of this song and style, it just seemed right.  i remembered reading about U2’s song “ultraviolet”:  bono said he had never used the word “baby” in a song, and then he used it dozens of times there.  🙂

of course the tone of that U2 song is very different from this; “don’t stop” is completely happy.  that’s not always the case for me.  most of my songs are not totally positive or negative; there’s usually a twist (or two), so a simple, straightforward love song is kind of a rarity.

what do you think of this “rarity”?  let me know in the comments.

i woke up this mornin’, and i looked at your face
i didn’t wanna be any other place
you’re the finest woman that i’ve ever seen
and i really like what you do to me

CHORUS
don’t stop.  i like what you’re doin’
don’t stop.  i like what you’re doin’
don’t stop what you’re doin’ to me, ’cause baby, i like it

i walked outside with a smile on my face
the birds were singin’ what a beautiful day
the sun was shinin’ in a sky of blue
but the sun can’t hold a candle to you

CHORUS

BRIDGE
you make me feel like i’ve never felt
i never got that from anybody else
i always wanna be by your side
’cause you make my heart flutter deep down inside

i’ve been so long without a song
but now, i’m singin’ ’cause you came along
i got good news, i lost my blues
and i don’t wanna be in any other shoes

CHORUS, ETC…
